West End Teens Mugged On Train At Knifepoint

A group of Rockaway teens riding the shuttle train was mugged and beaten last Friday night by knife-wielding attackers who pounced on them as they traveled between the peninsula and Broad Channel, police said.

The three victims and their two friends – all either 14 or 15 years old and from the west end of the peninsula – boarded the shuttle at the Beach 116 Street/Rockaway Park subway station at about 7:40 p.m. The thugs got on at the Beach 98 Street/Playland station, but they didn’t make a move until the train left the Beach 90 Street station for Broad Channel.

The attackers apparently figured that the longer distance between stops, as the train crossed over part of Jamaica Bay on the trestle, would give them the perfect opportunity to do their dirty work.

As the train pulled out of Beach 90 Street, one of the thugs went up to one of the teens, pulled a knife and demanded his necklace, police said. Two other thugs – one of them also carrying a knife – went over and demanded the other teens’ belongings.

“Lets see what’s in your pockets,” one of the attackers demanded.

The thugs stripped their victims of $150 in cash and a Motorola Razr, a sleek and popular cell phone, according to police. The thugs then unleashed a fury of punches – striking three of the teens in the head and face – before they fled on foot after the train pulled into the Broad Channel station.

Police were called, and officers searched the area but did not make any arrests. Police described the suspects as three black males, 17-20 years old. One was about 6 feet 4 inches tall, 210 pounds, with short hair, a dark complexion and a goatee. He wore a black baseball cap, with a blue tank-top or t-shirt and white sneakers. The second attacker was about 6 feet 1 inch tall, 200 pounds, with short braided hair and a dark complexion. He wore a black skullcap, a white sweatshirt or jacket and white sneakers. The third thug was five feet three inches tall, with long black hair in a pony tail and a medium complexion. He wore a black baseball cap, a black sweatshirt or jacket and black sneakers.

The names of the victims and their friends were withheld by police.

Anyone with information is asked to call the 100 Precinct Detective Squad at (718) 318-4221.
