Local retailers were notified of supplemental services contributing to the general maintenance and upkeep of the Beach 116th Street commercial corridor during a Monday, Aug. 27 press conference featuring Councilman Eric Ulrich.

Standing in front of the Paninico Café, Ulrich announced a new partnership with Wildcat Service Corporation ensuring that the business district would be of the receiving end of additional street and sidewalk garbage collection on a weekly basis year-round.

The local legislator extolled the virtues of the non-profit organization by highlighting their work throughout the five boroughs, which goes beyond trash collection in that Wildcat also provides power washing and graffiti removal services, as well as landscaping, tree pruning, snow clean-up and electronic disposal.

“You can see the businesses are open; commerce is booming and the local economy is thriving,” stated Ulrich. “We want to make sure that we support the small businessmen and women who own and operate their businesses here. One of the ways we can support them is to help them keep the front of their stores clean, so they don’t get tickets from Sanitation.”

He noted that the beautification effort is being funded with $70,000 in taxpayer dollars through the Cleaner New York City initiative.

Overseeing the cleanup crews that will soon be making their rounds along Beach 116th Street every Wednesday is Wildcat Senior Supervisor Sergey Shafir, who confirmed his company’s commitment to beautify the neighborhood by assuring Ulrich that his team would be ready to take on a variety of tasks at a moment’s notice.

Also joining the lineup of speakers were business owner and Rockaway Business Alliance (RBA) Treasurer Michael Gliner and local optometrist Dr. Daniel Mirkin of Mirkin Vision Care.

Both expressed their gratitude to Ulrich with Gliner also updating listeners about one of the RBA’s current endeavors to compose a Community Needs Assessment (CNA) that would bring added amenities to the commercial center.

Ulrich concluded the outdoor session by informing those in attendance that Wildcat’s manpower would be dispatched to various locations of his district. When asked if the same accommodations would be extended to retailers of Rockaway Beach Boulevard, the lawmaker told The Wave that NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) trucks would normally be called into action in the case of debris being dumped in the area.

“But if Sanitation weren’t able to do something, we would send Wildcat as well. I think it’s a great service to the taxpayers,” he added while inviting storekeepers to shake hands and interact with the Wildcat workers and even buy them coffee on days when they’re out sprucing up the strip.
