Crime continues to plague New York City with an increase in shooting incidents, murders and burglaries for the month of July, according to statistics revealed by the NYPD on Monday, August 3rd.

Shooting incidents for July increased by 177%, with 244 cases taken vs. just 88 during the same time last year. This is consistent with the overall trend in 2020, and from the beginning of the year to July 31, the NYPD recorded a 72% spike with shootings – leaping from 450 cases during the same time in 2019 to 772 today.

One of the ways the NYPD plans on handling it’s increasing shooting problem involves multiple Stop the Violence anti-gun town hall events said to take place across the five boroughs, with one taking place Thursday, August 6th in the Bronx.

Another challenging crime stat was the alarming increase in Murder, Burglary and Grand Theft Auto crimes. Murder cases increased by 30% when compared to the same seven months last year. Burglaries spiked by +31% in July and +45% year-to-date while GLA’s had +309 more cases with a +53% adage.

The additional crimes categories of Rape and Robbery decreased by -6% with Assault at -4.8% and Grand Larceny at -25%. Rape, however, continues to be underreported and the NYPD encouraged victims of sexual assault to come forward. Hate crimes also showed a decrease by -29% year-to-date.

The spikes in crime across the city, especially in shooting incidents, did not spare Rockaway this year. The 100th and 101st Precincts took a combination of 32 shootings from the beginning of the year to August 2nd, according to the NYPD CompStat database.

The 100th precinct took seven shootings so far this year, while last year only one shooting incident was reported. Although the precinct’s history of low major crime numbers put Rockaway residents at ease, it faces a steep incline in shootings compared to the last three years and may need to overcome their pattern of highs and lows.

The 101st took the brunt of the damage with 25 reported shootings compared to only 6 last year. These stat mirror shooting incidents recorded between 1999 and 2003.

Despite all of these upticks, however, NYPD brass says the force remains as committed as ever to maintaining law and order across the city.

“Amid the ongoing challenges of these times, the NYPD’s commitment to public safety never wavers,” said NYPD Police Commissioner Dermot Shea in a prepared statement. “Our men and women officers represent the best of the policing profession and work every day alongside those they serve in an ongoing joint mission to protect life, prevent crime and build safer neighborhoods for everyone across our great city.”

“We will continue doing what we have been doing,” added Councilman Donovan Richards. “Police and community collaboration are key. Also, the continuation of addressing the lack of investment in our community is our biggest strategy. As far as illegal guns, you should ask the Republicans that question.”
