Last weekend one of the first spring cleanups on the peninsula took place as the Rockaway Youth Task Force hosted ‘Clean the Rock, Clean The Block.’

The cleanup, originally scheduled to take place around the perimeter of Beach 60th Street, was extended to include the area around Beach 90th Street when extra volunteers showed up.

“We had 60 volunteers and we’re expecting another 20,” said Milan Taylor, the president of the RYTF early in the cleanup effort on Saturday. “We wanted to get both sides of the peninsula. Historically we’ve been focusing on the east end but we wanted to branch out to the entire peninsula and help in the efforts of rebuilding the commu-nity.”

Approximately 120 bags of debris were collected. The Parks Department helped with the pickup.
