On Saturday, Mar. 1, Poseidon’s Prom returned to the Knights of Columbus in Rockaway with dozens dressed up in seafaring costumes and ready to set sail into the summer, while raising funds for this year’s Annual Poseidon Parade.
“We’re all friends and family here,” said Diane O’Donnell, a local resident. “It’s a great cause and we get to be silly.” The prom also featured works of art by community artists, such as Geoff Rawling and Michael O’Leary. The donated art was bid on in a silent auction to raise funds for the parade at the prom. “I am an artist and I teach art to children with autism. My goal is for those who are not artists by trade to not be intimidated by the whole art scene,” said Casey Brouder, one of the organizers of the Poseidon Parade. “My goal is to try and draw in the community and expose people who are not normally art buyers to the scene.”
From glow-in-the dark jellyfish to pirates and mermaids, the Poseidon’s Prom brought out a creative side in everyone on the dance floor. Those who didn’t bring a costume didn’t have to worry, since there was even a section of donated costumes at the prom. “The prom is about bringing the spirit of tonight’s party to the boardwalk parade,” said Alex Cannon, a member of the parade committee. “The Poseidon Parade is different than others because we’re a lot more family and community oriented. We partnered with the Parks Department to make sure it’s accessible for everyone of all ages.”
While a date for this year’s Poseidon Parade has not been set yet, it is tentatively scheduled after Labor Day Weekend on Sept. 16. If you missed the Poseidon’s Prom and would like to donate, you can email the parade organizers at posiedonsparade- @gmail.com.
