Performances Planned At Viking Sail 2000

Rockaway Viking Sail 2000, planned for Sunday, September 3, is heating up with a day packed full of family fun festivities. The event, which is sponsored by the Rockaway Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with Keyspan Energy and the Queens City Council on the Arts, is starting at 12 p.m. at Beach 116 street and Beach Channel drive.

The festivities will move from bay to beachfront during the late afternoon and will continue until 9 p.m. From 1:30 to 4 p.m., the street festival and mini carnival will include children’s art projects, crafts, dance, and vendors, as well as music and entertainment.

The event is centered around Viking history, but will also include historic all-American country western entertainment. Among the many performers will be Ridin’ High, a five- piece country music band and one of New York’s top bands, whose spectrum of country music spans from bluegrass to cajun and western swing. Ridin’ High has opened for national acts such as Tanya Tucker, The Oak Ridge Boys, and Garth Brooks.

Also performing later in the day at The Beach Club will be recording artists The Neil Scott Johnson Band. The band plays original country music and was named "Band of the Year," by the New York Country Music association in 1999. The five-piece band has also opened for national acts such as Doctor Hook and Randy Travis.

To complete the western theme, an Indian Pow Wow presented by the Cherokee Blackfeet Cultural Circle will be performed from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the beach at 116 street. The Pow Wow will feature various Native American craft stands as well as music and tribal dancing.

"There will be plenty of parking available for the days of the events," says Liz Sulik, president-elect of the Rockaway Chamber of Commerce. A free shuttle bus will be available and will be running from Riss Park parking lot to Beach 116 street courtesy of the Green Bus Line. The free shuttle bus will run from 12:20 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The event will end at 8:30 p.m. on the beach at 116 street with a spectacular Grucci fireworks show to say good-bye to summer 2000.
