PHC To Host Diabetes Awareness Day

Peninsula Hospital Center, an affiliate of North Shore-LIJ Health System, will be hosting a “Diabetes Awareness Day” special event on Monday, November 17, 2008.

The entire event will be devoted to the provision of information for diabetics and their families through guest presenters and on-site information booths. This special event will be held from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Meditation Room of the Peninsula Center for Extended Care and Rehabilitation, located adjacent to the Hospital Center at 50-15 Beach Channel Drive, Far Rockaway.

On the agenda for “Diabetes Awareness Day” will be a series of lectures with guest speakers addressing such important subjects such as the PHC Diabetes Support Group, nutrition and diabetes, diabetes and medicine, podiatry, ophthalmology, cardiology, juvenile diabetes and healthy cooking tips which includes a cooking demonstration.

In addition to the lectures, information booths and personnel will be available in the Meditation Room highlighting nutrition, diabetic supplies, Visiting Nurses Services of New York, podiatry, ophthalmology, physical therapy and cardiology. There are games, prizes and other surprises planned for this special day designed solely for the diabetic patients of all ages and their families.

Diabetes currently affects 246 million people globally, including nearly 21 million children and adults in the United States. For all of them and the many millions more at risk, November has been earmarked as Worldwide Diabetes Awareness Month.
