A police officer in the 101 Precinct was accidentally shot with a handgun that he had just taken off the streets of Far Rockaway Tuesday night, sources told The Wave.

The unidentified sergeant, who had just recovered the fragile, older-style revolver during an arrest, was attempting to secure the gun when it fired – striking him once in the leg.

The officer’s injury, while not life threatening, sparked a major response in the 100 Precinct after a 10-13 “Officer Needs Assistance” call went out over police radios at about 10:30 p.m. A lieutenant, who guarded the nature of the incident, was then heard requesting an ambulance to the Mott Avenue stationhouse.

Fellow police officers instead whisked their injured comrade to St. John’s Hospital where doctors assessed his condition and recommended transferring him to Jamaica Hospital.

Additional police units were mobilized to block traffic on sections of Cross Bay Boulevard and the Van Wyck Expressway to shave minutes off of the officer’s ambulance ride from Far Rockaway to Jamaica.

The officer was expected to be released from the hospital Wednesday afternoon.

“He’s fine… He’s more embarrassed than anything,” said a source.
