In the midst of a crime heavy weekend on the Rockaway peninsula, an NYPD Detective, who lives in Rockaway, took his own life on Sunday night.

Detective Brendan Mcveigh, who was 28-years old, was a recently promoted investigator at the 9th Precinct, responsible for South East Manhattan, took his own life at his home on Beach 139th Street.

Mcveigh, a seven-year veteran of the NYPD, was found by his fiancee around 11:30 p.m. Sunday night with a gunshot wound to the head.

He was taken to Kings County hospital but did not survive.

The 9th Precinct, where he recently joined the detective squad, tweeted a statement Monday night:

“With much sorrow, the 9th precinct mourns the passing of Detective Mcveigh. Brendan did his job with passion and was loved by all of us here in the 9th Pct. Our sincere hope is that the all knowing Almighty console his friends and family in this difficult period. We love you.”

In the wake of an uptick in police suicides, the NYPD required suicide prevention training in 2019.

“Our hearts are broken as we mourn the loss of Detective Brendan Mcveigh,” Detective Endowment Association President Paul DiGiacomo said Tuesday in a statement to the New York Daily News. “He was an amazing detective, highly respected by his peers, but even the strongest among us sometimes needed a helping hand.

“As the union stands in support of his family, this tragic incident highlights the tremendous stressors of our jobs. We want our members to know they are never alone and help is available 24/7.”

I love reading Joe Foxes stories. They allow you to enter areas that you would never otherwise would have the opportunity to dao. He is a true New Yorker who loves and had served his city and he proudly tells about it. God bless him
