Police Impersonator Robs Neighbors

By Joan Ward George

Last Friday morning Jose Garcia, 33, of Central avenue, decided to impersonate a police officer and commit a wave of robberies right in his own neighborhood.

Packing a .357 magnum hand gun, Garcia decided to knock on the doors of apartments at 20 Central avenue. He identified himself, according to police, as a policeman in order to enter the apartments, all the time displaying the powerful revolver. After a couple of tries, when no one would open their door to him, Garcia fled to the street where he held up a 40 year old man in the street and then fired a shot into the ground, to make a point, police speculate.

On a roll now, Garcia decided to pull his scheme again, but by that time police from the 101 Precinct were on the scene and placed him under arrest.

According to police, Garcia has been charged with criminal impersonation of a police officer, robbery, criminal possession of a weapon, and reckless endangerment.
