Maria Medina

Tenants of the Redfern Houses in Far Rockaway joined with elected officials, community leaders, and the Guardian Angels on Saturday, May 6 to honor the memory of Maria Medina, who was killed on March 10, 2000 after being caught in the crossfire of two men arguing over a woman (See Wave, March 18, 2000). Medina, who was on tenant patrol at the time, left behind three children, ages 12 to 19.

The day’s events started with a march around the Redfern Houses to reclaim the community. That was followed by a service at the First Baptist Church on Redfern avenue to commemorate Medina’s life and to officially launch the Maria Medina Memorial Fund. The monies raised through this fund will be used to enable Medina’s children to continue their educational and career (business) pursuits.

James Sanders jr., vice president of Community School Board 27 and a community activist, organized the march. Joining Sanders in sponsoring this event were the New York City Housing Authority, Redfern Tenant Patrol, Redfern Residents Council, Congressman Gregory Meeks, Ernest Brown (SB 27), and Gyanda Shivnarain (Kiwanis of the Rockaways).

Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels, addressed those who gathered on Saturday, announcing that through his radio show he had raised more than $5,000 for the Medina Memorial Fund. Sliwa and his Guardian Angels made themselves visible during the day’s events, visiting the basketball court and park inside the Redfern Houses to preach an anti-violence message to the kids.

For those who were not able to attend the march and service, but would like to donate to the cause, can send donations to the Maria Medina Memorial Fund, c/o James Sanders jr., 14-41 Beach Channel drive, Far Rockaway, New York, 11691.
