Summer Crime Prevention Tips

Lock Windows, Doors And Stay Alert

By Joan Ward George

With the warm weather already visiting the Rockaway shores, Captain Gary Scirica, commanding officer of the 100 Precinct, asked The Wave to convey some simple, yet often forgotten ideas for assuring a safe summer season.

"You’ve got to lock your doors and windows even though the weather gets hot," said Scirica. "This is most important when no one is at home. It’s an open invitation for a burglar, and it happens more and more during the summer months." Scirica also pointed out that, although many parts of Rockaway appear to be very safe, residents need not operate on the assumption that crime is non-existent. He cautions Rockawayites not to leave valuable objects, such as radios, cell phones, pocketbooks or wallets, in their cars in clear view of passersby. "And", Scirica adds, "lock your car doors and take your keys, you wouldn’t believe how many people in this area leave their car doors open while they are in shopping areas."

Another summertime safety tip from the good captain is a caution to beachgoers not to leave their money and property unattended while they swim, walk along the surf, or visit the concession stands. "You just have to be out of sight for a minute and all of your things could be stolen," Scirica said. "Basically, everyone really just needs to stay alert and keep an eye out and use common sense. That way we’ll all have a much safer summer on Rockaway Beach."

An extra summertime safety tip from The Wave: Going away for an extended period of time this summer? Suspend your newspaper subscriptions for the period of time that you’ll be gone. Unclaimed papers stacking up on your front porch is a dead giveaway that no one’s home.
