Support Local Journalism

Dear Editor:

Passage of the “New York Local Journalism Sustainability Act ” (Editorial — March 24) by the State Legislature is essential for the continued survival of remaining weekly newspapers. Most communities are down to one local daily or weekly newspaper. Newspapers have to deal with increasing costs for newsprint, delivery, and distribution along with reduced advertising revenues and competition from the Internet and other news information sources.

Daily newspapers concentrate on international, Washington, Albany, business, and sports stories. They have few reporters covering local neighborhood news. Weekly newspapers fill the void for coverage of local community news.

I’m grateful that you have afforded me the opportunity to express my views via letters to the editor along with others who may have different opinions on the issues of the day.

Albany needs to join us in supporting weekly community newspapers. Readers patronize advertisers; they provide the revenues to help keep them in business. Let us hope there continues to be room for everyone including the Wave.

We Need More Trash Cans

Dear Editor:

I am writing to express my deep concern about the lack of accessible trash cans on the streets from Beach 149th St to Beach 116th in our community. This issue has been long-standing and is having a severe impact on our environment and the quality of life for residents. As a resident of the Rockaway Beach community, I have witnessed firsthand the negative impact of not having enough trash cans in our neighborhood.

As we all know, the Rockaway Beach community is a cherished and beautiful place, attracting many tourists and locals alike. However, the increasing number of visitors has resulted in a significant amount of litter and waste being left behind. The lack of accessible trash cans on our streets only exacerbates this issue, leading to an accumulation of waste in our environment and negatively affecting the health of our ecosystem.

Moreover, our community is a dog-walking community, and we lack proper disposal methods for pet waste. This has resulted in our streets being littered with poop bags and seeing people resorting to throwing them down the rain drains, which is an alarming hazard to the environment. This is a problem that affects not only the residents of Rockaway Beach but also the wildlife and ocean surrounding us.

It is time for our community to take action and implement a solution that addresses these issues. By providing more accessible trash cans on the streets, we can ensure that waste is disposed of in an environmentally-friendly way, reducing the carbon footprint left by tourism and preserving the natural beauty of our community. This would also significantly improve the quality of life for residents, giving us the ability to dispose of our waste properly and ensuring that our streets remain clean and safe.

In summary, the need for more accessible trash cans in our community is an urgent and pressing matter. The environmental impact and the negative effects on our quality of life cannot be overstated. We need to come together as a community to take action and address this issue immediately.

I urge the community board to prioritize this issue and take concrete steps toward providing more accessible trash cans in our community.
