‘It’s Still A Dog’s New York’ To Help

Children Heal From WTC Attack

National Geographic, one of the oldest and most respected publishers in the nation, has published a children’s book that it hopes will help children to deal with losses sustained in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on September 11.

"We wanted to publish a book that will help children to find comfort in the midst of tragedy," says Ellen Siskind, a spokesperson for the National Geographic Society.

"It’s Still A Dog’s New York: A Book of Healing," by Susan Roth, published last month, is called a "timely and charming book about coping with bereavement for children ages five through 11." It is an updated version of Roth’s "It’s A Dog’s New York," published previously by National Geographic.

"It’s Still a Dog’s New York" is the story of how two New York City dogs, Pepper and Rover, respond to the World Trade Center tragedy. Pepper feels overwhelmed with sadness, fear and anger. But in a tour of New York City, his friend Rover shows him that even though they’re sad, they can go on. Pepper learns that helping others, expressing his feelings, celebrating the bravery of rescue workers, and allowing himself to enjoy life can lead to healing, and that the pair are not underdogs, but top dogs. He discovers Americans are strong enough to survive and thrive and that it’s still a dog’s New York.

"Not only do the book’s optimistic words and pictures provide a unique opportunity for parents and teachers to help children deal with emotional fallout from the events of September 11," Siskind says.

Dr. Frederic Solomon, clinical professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at George Washington University School of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences, says. "I wish that every young child in America could be lucky enough to have this book read to him or to her."

All of the profits from the book will go towards supplying every elementary school in the New York Metropolitan area with a copy.
