Rockaway resident Nick Compagnone isn’t exactly a dedicated career bicyclist, but for the third time in as many years the young real estate executive is gearing up for a 100-mile bike ride that will take him down much of the length of New Jersey—and it’s all for a worthy cause.

“I’m riding along with several others from Douglas Elliman to raise money for a group called God’s Love We Deliver,” Compagnone told the Wave. “Every $10 that we raise goes to pay for someone’s meal through them, and I’m hoping to raise at least $20,000 myself to help out with their mission.”

In total, the group of bike-riding realtors is hoping to raise a quartermillion dollars, but even this amount is just a drop in the bucket when it comes to covering the charity’s overall expenses. Each year, the charity cooks and delivers more than 1.9 million meals to feed sick and needy people in the area, and 30,000 of those meals find their way right here to the Rockaway peninsula.

And for Compagnone, there is a more personal reason to support the group. “My own aunt is actually a recipient of food from God’s Love” he says. “A lot of times, we give money to organizations, but never really see the return from it. But I see that return every single day. My aunt was diagnosed with a life-changing illness, and through the service provided by God’s Love, her life was made so much easier, and we can rest easi er too knowing that she is being well fed and taken care of.”

Last year, Nick was able to raise $10,000 for the organization through his bike riding, and he hopes that this year people will come out to support him even more as word continues to spread.

“It’s what I really love about this neighborhood,” he says. “It has some of the best, most caring people that I’ve ever met in my life. When I start to lose faith in humanity, I look around here and think about some of the truly amazing things people from Rockaway have done and will continue to do, and it gives me a little hope for the future.”

Compagnone will be riding this year on October 27. Anyone interested in supporting Mr. Compagnone and donating towards God’s Love We Deliver, is asked to send their contributions to  https://www.crowdrise.com/nicholascompagnone
