Far Rock Shooting Spree Turns Deadly

There’s been a flurry of shootings in the Rockaway area, and it recently turned deadly as police say two individuals – one just 15 years old – both died of gunshot wounds at around 2 p.m. on July 14 in Far Rockaway.

According to police sources, Jamel Jordan, 34 and stepson 15-year-old Karmello Ferrer — the son of Jordan’s girlfriend, Shakisha May — were fatally shot inside a house on Deerfield Road near Beach 29th Street. Initial reports state that the shooting may have been perpertrated by two gunmen, another report said a murder-suicide, however, our sources indicate that while two persons of interest in the case were brought in for questions, the physical evidence doesn’t support either of those scenarios.

Our source said, “it appears the shootings occurred while they scuffled for the gun.”

The Wave contacted 101st Precinct’s commanding officer, Capt. Eric Robinson for his input on the recent uptick in shootings.

Robinson said there have been six gun violence incidents in the 101 patrol area in the last seven days, and only two of them were in the gang nexus, meaning they were either gang “beefs” or long-standing rivalries that pop up from time to time.

“What’s concerning is that the other four shootings were totally random,” said Robinson. “We have tools to combat this crisis; we are working with community groups like Rock Safe Streets to stop the violence.”

On July 11, the 101st Precinct reported that there were three shootings in the confines of its patrol area, the first of which occurred at Mott and Cornaga Avenues at about 7:30 p.m.  EMS transported the male victim to Jamaica Hospital. Injuries appear non life-threatening, preliminarily. Assailant not immediately apprehended.

Another shooting occurred at 8 p.m. at 54-75 Almeda Avenue. The victim – a male, age 22, was shot in a hallway there, victim taken to Jamaica Hospital by EMS with arm and leg injuries.

The third shooting took place at 2105 Dix Avenue: Police say a male victim, age 31, shot while seated in a vehicle there. The perpetrator fled. Victim to Jamaica via EMS. Injury to the abdomen. Investigation is ongoing.

The pandemic has definitely played a role, in the rise in shootings, said Robinson.

“People have been cooped up, schools have been closed and programs for young people have all been canceled,” he said.  “For our part, though we’ve never dealt with this kind of thing before, our people have the talent and the commitment to work with our friends in the community to get this done.”

There are a number of reasons that are hampering the efforts to curtail gun violence, says NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan.

“A lot of different things are going on – bail reform, releases from prison, courts are shut down, half the population of the jails are out and the animosity towards police tremendous,” Monahan told the New York Post. ‘Everyone is trying to fight police officers when they want to make an arrest. We want to hear support for cops leaders to speak up for the police who are out there. Morale is low and the rhetoric is a small minority.”

Robinson said they are working hard to solve the shootings, and all are being investigated by the 101 Precinct Detective Squad. Anyone with information is asked to call the squad at 718-868-3429.
