Editorial: New York’s Local Journalism Sustainability Act

Every Friday, The Wave arrives at your local newsstand or is delivered to your doorstep, and is available online at rockawave.com.

Each week, our staff is hard at work to provide our readers with the most comprehensive coverage of the issues that matter to all of us on the peninsula.

You’ll see Wave reporters at civic meetings, community board meetings, local events, and press conferences. We take pride in making sure our editorial staff is out and about at everything we can. Additionally, The Wave does everything in-house, with the exception of the actual printing of the newspaper. Our design, layout, editorial, marketing, and sales are all done In Rockaway, and thanks to our local businesses and other advertising partners, that’s the way it’s going to stay.

But like every small business in New York State, we’re dealing with the same economic reality.
Revenue is down, costs are up, and in communities like Rockaway, the challenges of maintaining staff are always an issue.

People often ask, how can we help support local journalism?

Well, many of you already do. Our subscription sales are up, our website traffic is up, and our social media interactions remain strong. Our readers also support our efforts by regularly frequenting the local businesses that advertise on our pages, and many of you also advertise as well.

There is one other thing you can do, and that is to contact NYS your Assembly members Stacey Pheffer Amato and Khaleel M. Anderson, as well as NYS Senor James Sanders, and tell them to vote YES on bills A.2958-A and S.625-A, to enact New York’s Local Journalism Sustainability Act.

These bills offer a payroll tax credit to local newspapers, providing some protection in these uncertain economic times.

In May, The Wave will be celebrating our 130th Anniversary, and the passage of these bills could literally be the icing on the cake.
