In celebration of ‘National Pizza Day,’ The Black Surfing Association (BSA) gang gathered at Whit’s End for their latest cooking lesson on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 9.

Whitney Aycock, Whit’s End founder had the established pizzeria on lockdown as more than a dozen BSA kids were taught how to perfect a large disc of dough, covered with tomato paste, sprinkled down with grated cheese or pieces of mozzarella cheese and various toppings to choose from in order to create a cheesy delicious delight.

Additionally, Whit’s End recently expanded the space of the pizzeria with many new renovations and more in the process to add to the beauty of Whit’s aesthetic look. This includes a newly-designed backyard for the bustling summer days in Rockaway.

“It’s easy, I just wanted space where I can express myself,” said Aycock. “There’s a lot of history here like the arcade and Playland across the street… like it was pure amazingness, and once I came into the building, I had ‘good guts,’ and the bones of it were there, the noise and atmosphere of it all came alive… and I knew it’s where I wanted to be.”

Dating back over a decade, this is known to be the third newly-released version of Whit’s End, with Rockaway Beach Barbecue (RBQ) standing in place of their last location.

“The world passes by this door every day, I mean I grew up in the Caribbean and then The Outer Banks of North Carolina, eventually there was not enough to keep me there,” explains Aycock. “I needed a bigger city or something close by to keep my attention and Rockaway just had it all.”

Besides holding cooking workshops for the BSA members, Aycock also invites local schools over once in a while for free pizza … and who wouldn’t love free pizza?

“Pizza solves all the world’s problems,” adds Aycock. “We live in a time where home cooking is fading with all these take-out food joints so to have connectivity to food, man… like I said pizza solves world problems.”

The day ended on a high note as the BSA gang and their parents chowed down on freshly baked pizza pies right out of the fiery old school oven, and it was anything but disappointing.
