With looming economic and social challenges facing working Americans, the Bipartisan Congressional Caucus on the Middle Class today met with leaders from the White House Middle Class Task Force in a round-table discussion about innovative steps to improve the living standards of middle class Americans.

Jared Bernstein, executive director of the White House Middle Class Task Force, and Terrell McSweeny, director of the White House Middle Class Task Force, discussed their priorities and listened to ideas shared by members of the caucus.

Important topics on the agenda were: healthcare; retirement security; paying for college; and housing foreclosures.

The Middle Class Caucus and Task Force plan to work together to develop new solutions and legislation to protect the middle class and those struggling to make it.

“It used to be that the middle class was able to achieve the American dream of owning a decent home in a safe neighborhood with a good public school, having access to affordable health care, saving for college and retirement, and enjoying the occasional meal out, movie, and vacation. But realizing this dream has become increasingly challenging for middleclass families.

The task force will focus on making the American dream accessible once again to the middle class,” said Bernstein.

Middle Class Caucus co-chair, Rep. LaTourette (R-Ohio), said, “The problems facing the middle class aren’t a partisan issue, and this caucus demonstrates that if we work together we can get things done and keep focused on what is important. There are many concerns facing the middle class, and this bipartisan caucus will give members an opportunity to craft policies and initiatives of importance.”

Middle Class Caucus co-chair, Rep. Anthony Weiner, said, “The middle class and those struggling to make it have a new voice.

Whether it’s making housing more affordable or quality health care more accessible, this group is going to protect working Americans. What a difference a year makes.”
