NYPD Releases Image Of Disney
Bedsheet

Detectives have released an image of the bedsheet – covered with Disney characters – that was wrapped around the young boy whose badly decomposed body was discovered on Beach 110 Street last Saturday.

The white sheet has the letters of the alphabet on it and is covered with Disney’s well-known animated characters.

On the sheet, Goofy, with skis on his feet and a racing number on his chest, has a panicked look on his face. Mickey Mouse, who is featured several times on the sheet, is dressed as a firefighter in one spot and is standing behind an old-fashioned motion picture camera in another. Donald and Daisy Duck also appear. A photo appears on page 48.

The boy’s body was wrapped in the sheet and then stuffed inside a yellow canvass duffel bag, police said. Authorities are hoping that someone will recognize the sheet, which could lead to a break in the case, said a police source. They asked anyone with information to call their anonymous tips line at (800) 577-TIPS.

At this point, just how the child came to rest on Beach 110 Street remains a mystery.

“The [ocean] currents could have taken it from Breezy Point, New Jersey, Staten Island or Beach 105 Street, and it could have been under snow and sand for months,” the police source told The Wave.

Authorities said, based on forensic evidence, the boy was between the age of 3 and 5 years old, possibly white or Hispanic, about 3 feet tall and about 28 pounds.

The Chief Medical Examiner’s office continued to examine the child’s remains this week and has assigned anthropologist Bradley Adams to their investigation, according to spokesperson Grace Brugess.

Meanwhile, a makeshift memorial is growing on the sand just above the high-tide mark on the shore of Beach 110 Street, and the Rockaway Rotary is looking into providing a proper burial when the medical examiner’s work is complete.

The memorial, a cluster of stuffed animals, small toys, Rosary Beads, seashells, flowers wrapped in cellophane and helium balloons, sprouted the day after Beach 109 Street resident Cecelia Davis and her friend Carol made the grisly find while walking Davis’ dog Monti. One thoughtful mourner left a pack of tissues for anyone overcome with tears at the sad memorial.

Davis told The Wave she was meandering along the shore last Saturday at about 4:30 p.m., picking up seashells – enjoying the first warm day in weeks – when she noticed the Disney sheet.

“I looked over and thought, ‘Look how cute. It’s Donald and Goofy,'” Davis recalled. Then, she said, she took a closer look and noticed a human body part.

“I said, ‘Oh my God, there is a foot. This is a child,'” Davis said to her friend who was stunned. They dialed 911 immediately, she said.

“[The police] responded so quickly and appropriately,” said Davis.

Her work as a nurse, Davis said, has made Davis comfortable with the notion of death and dead people, but the discovery of such a young boy has left a mark on her.

“Even an animal doesn’t deserve to lay there like that,” she said. “But I have faith that the child is at peace now.”

Police hope someone will recognize this sheet - which could help them identify the boy whose body was found on the beach.
