All students are “hitting the books” once more as the weather shows its temperate side.

Temperatures are comfortable enough to wear summer duds on most days, but the breezes have picked up a bit. Most people have harvested edibles from their gardens and most flowers are on the wane, if not gone. Some trees have a touch of color in their leaves — just enough to remind everyone that fall is near!

On Wednesday, September 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. see the almost-full Harvest Moon rise on the first day of autumn in the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Take a moonlit guided walk on the West Pond Trail. Sign up in advance by calling 718-318-4340.

The CYO/St. Camillus/Virgilius/ BCAC Division Champion Girls Swim team will hold registration on Saturday, September 18 from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, September 25 from 10 a.m. to noon and Saturday, September 30 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the BCAC field. Boys and Girls Swim clinic registration will also take place on those days. There are only 64 available spots for swim clinic so it will be on a first come, first served basis. St. Virgilius Rosary-Altar Society will meet on Monday, September 20 at 12:30 p.m. in the Meeting Room, 16 Noel Road. All women are invited.

Broad Channel Athletic Club presents the 11th Annual John J. Monahan Softball Tournament on Saturday, September 25 at the 20th Road field in Broad Channel at 9:30 a.m. Entry fee of $300.00 per team includes umpire fees and party after the tournament. Christ Presbyterian Church will present a Sunday Brunch on September 26 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. On the menu are a choice of: scrambled eggs with bacon or sausage or pancakes with bacon or sausage. Hash browns will be served with both. Coffee, tea, juice and cake will be served. Donation is $7.

On Sunday, September 26 Bingo will be presented at the VFW Hall at 705 Shad Creek Road, Broad Channel. Jackpot Prize is $100 guaranteed. Proceeds to go to the Veterans’ Thanksgiving dinner! Donation is $5. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. Calling begins at 2:30 p.m. Bring a friend and get a free card. Bring a senior, get 2 free cards.

A two-session Defensive Driving Course sponsored by St. Virgilius Parish will be given on Wednesday, September 29 and Thursday, September 30 from 7 to 10 p.m. in the School Building at 16 Noel Road in Broad Channel, in the lunchroom. By taking this course, you can receive a 10 percent reduction on your car insurance for 3 years or up to 4 points off your license. No test will be given. Fee is $60. If you attended the course in September 2007, your certificate expires in September 2010. Payment in full guarantees a seat — they are unable to hold a seat without payment.

The last day at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge visitor center to see the art exhibit on Birds of the Northeast United States will be on Thursday, September 30.

The Historical Society of the Broad Channel Civic Association will sponsor Historical Day on Sunday, October 3 at the VFW Hall on Shad Creek Road in Broad Channel from noon to 5 p.m.

The public is invited to view the collection; it tells the town’s history through many different media.

The 2011 Historical Calendar, which gives times of high tide, will be on sale. The book “Broad Channel” will also be on sale and the authors, Liz and Dan Guarino, will be on hand to sign it.

Residents are encouraged to bring new material for the collection. Original pictures and documents will be copied and returned to donors. For further information, telephone Barbara Toborg at 718-474-1127.

On Saturday, October 9 from 7 p.m. to midnight the Broad Channel American Legion Auxiliary will present “A Tribute to Sinatra and Elvis.” Cost of $25 per person includes the show, pasta and one free drink. For more information or for advance tickets call Carol at 718-634-7235.

Save the Date: On Friday, November 12 a Job Fair will be held at the Aqueduct Racetrack Clubhouse (event will be held indoors in 3rd Floor Manhattan Terrace Room) at 110-00 Rockaway Boulevard, South Ozone Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free parking; wheelchair accessible; business attire is suggested. More than 100 potential employers are expected; bring plenty of resumes.

St. Virgilius Golden Age Club (age 50 and over) meets every Thursday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. in Christ Presbyterian Church by the Sea Hall (entrance on Church Road). All seniors are welcome.

Every Thursday from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., there will be a free Yoga Class with Broad Channel resident and yoga instructor Mary Lou in Fort Tilden in building sTudio 7 (through main gate to intersection in front of old chapel; turn right, go past Post Theater and T6 to T7 on left. Parking is available outside T6 and T7). Bring mat or towel. Wear loose comfortable clothes.

The Broad Channel Library has new hours: Monday and Thursday from 1 to 8 p.m.; Tuesday from 1 to 6 p.m.; Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturdays, the library will be closed.
