Attorney Busted After Traffic Stop

A prominent local attorney was busted by police on November 22, after he began behaving badly at a traffic stop, police and court officials say.

The attorney, Victor Re, whose office is at 231 Beach 116 Street tells a different story.

According to court records, Re was driving on Beach 116 Street when he was stopped by two police officers for not wearing a seat belt while the vehicle was in motion.

Those records say that when the officers asked for his license and registration, Re became abusive to the police officers, screaming obscenities and causing a large crowd to gather. In addition, records say, he attempted to resist arrest by flailing his arms at the officers when they attempted to put him under arrest.

Re says otherwise. In a statement issued to The Wave by his friend and fellow attorney, Brian Sullivan, Re says that he is innocent.

He said that he was driving with his seat belt on when he was "wrongfully stopped by the two officers."

"I showed them that I was wearing my seatbelt, and they told me, ‘Tell it to the judge.’ "

He says that the cops yelled at him because he could not quickly find his driving documentation.

"The cops began yelling at me," he said. "I told them to be quiet."

Then, the cops asked him to step out of the car and they quickly handcuffed him, telling him, he said, that you don’t tell police officers to be quiet.

They made him sit on the curb, handcuffed.

"We exchanged words," Re said, but did not disclose the words that were exchanged between him and the two cops.

Re, 43, was arraigned on November 23, charged with resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

He was given an adjournment in contemplation of dismissal (ACD) by the judge. If Re causes no legal problems between now and May 20, his case will be dismissed and the records sealed.
