Dear Editor:

Let’s get real. It’s not just Republicans “generally” who are against abortion, but many Democrats and even some Liberals too! In fact there are many former Democrat voters who now vote Republican – only because of this issue. All sorts of people are against abortion, including the former editor of the Village Voice, Nat Hentoff, and former abortionist, Dr. Bernard Nathanson, who was one of the early founders of NARAL. His conversion to the pro-life side came after he realized he had presided over “60,000 deaths” because of the abortions he had performed.

But let’s get back to politics. The current Democrat ticket recently broke new ground – or sunk to new lows, actually – when Hillary Clinton verbalized her approval of abortion through the ninth month of pregnancy.

So why does Norm Scott in his School Scope column (The Wave 10/21/16) call pro-life people “extremist” or “right-wingers” because they believe the life in the womb is human life and should be respected, welcomed and protected?

Who is the real extremist?

Mr. Scott said we care about human life only up to birth. The evidence does not show that. I am proud to be part of a community that respects and believes in the dignity of all human life. Catholics have provided every kind of compassionate health care, social services, and education in our schools and universities, and hospitals and institutions in this country. Where else do you find people like the Little Sisters of the Poor who dedicate their entire lives caring for the sick poor in their nursing homes around the country?

I wish Mr. Scott would open his eyes, and his heart, and see that every human being, no matter how small, has a right to live. This is the most important issue.
