The 15th annual Graybeards Family Run will be held this year on Friday, July 20. The evening will begin with children’s races of varying lengths from Beach 129th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard at 6:30 p.m. An inspirational run by Rockaway’s Special Athletes will follow at 6:45 p.m. The 1-Mile Run is next at 7:00 p.m. and then the marquee 5k Run at 7:15 p.m.. Post-race festivities will be in St. Francis de Sales Fr. Grogan Memorial Schoolyard, and includes food, beverages, children’s rides, awards, raffles, and music by Gearth, Wind & Fireman. In person registration is available at St. Francis on July 14, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., July 15, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., July 19, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. and on the day of the race, July 20, 4 p.m. – 6p.m. This year, the Family Run will be the middle run of the Rockaway Triple Crown Summer Series. The Kevin Kearney Rockapulco 5k kicks things off on Saturday July 14. The BCAC Shamrock Run will wrap things up on Friday July 27, and the male and female runners with the best combined time in the three races will be crowned as the Series Champions.

Beach Flix Are Back! Join the Rockaway Civic Association for a special movie night at the hockey rink at Beach 108th Street on Friday, July 6 at 8:30 p.m. for a free presentation of “Despicable Me 3.” Rain date is July 7, same time. Bring beach chairs!
Creative Conversations is a signature program of the Queens Council on the Arts; it’s a dinner meeting where you will have the opportunity to network, organize, meet community stakeholders, develop strategies for community advocacy and learn about other QCA opportunities. Congratulations and thanks are in order for two locals; Sergeant Christopher Cruz from Belle Harbor, who has re-enlisted to continue service with the 107th Military Police Company, and Sgt. 1st Class Neftali Perez from Arverne, who has re-enlisted to continue service with the Battery B, 1-258th Field Artillery. These members of the State National Guard deserve our recognition for their continuing commitment to serve community, state and nation as part of the Army National Guard.
Join Rockaway Waterfront Alliance for a clean-up and paddle day along Jamaica Bay. on Saturday, July 7, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. The day will start at RISE (58-03 Rockaway Beach Blvd). Local residents and children of all ages are encouraged to participate in this stewardship event. There will be a limited number of kayaks for the public to use at no cost. Kayaks will be assigned on a first-come first-served basis to those who participate in the clean-up. Participants are required to sign a waiver on the day of the event. Children under 16 must have a parent present to sign their waiver.
The weekly volunteer cleanup & maintenance of Tribute Park has begun. Every Tuesday, weather permitting, until the fall, volunteers may stop by between 8:30-10:00 a.m. to help in the park. Any time you give will be helpful to maintain the park. Weeding, snipping, planting, sweeping and watering are a number of tasks for the volunteers. Wear comfortable work/gardening clothes.
