The annual memorial swim to honor the memory of Firefighter Steven Belson, who was killed in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, was held last Saturday at Beach 90 Street better known as “Bell‘s Beach.“ Belson was a lifeguard on that beach in his younger days and often surfed there. As part of the memorial, present day lifeguards were awarded college incentive scholarships by family members, including Belson’s brother and his nephew. Those who received the scholarships included: Elizabeth Daisy Diehm (Beach 73 Street Shack); Morgan White (Beach 135 Street Shack); Michelle Rudolph (Beach 17 Street Shack); Patrick Coleman (Breezy Point); Kaitlyn Touhey (Beach 149 Street Shack); Michael O’Connor (Riis Park); Joseph Keenan (Beach 106 Street Shack); Connor McElroy (Beach 149 Street Shack); Kerry King (Beach 73 Street Shack) and Brian King (Beach 117 Street Shack). Sean Kelleher, the event’s coordinator, thanked the lifeguards, adding that 95 lifeguards have received a total of $97,000 since the program began in 2002. 065p1.jpg
