Better keep your eye on the road, even when you are on the sidewalk. On Tuesday, a contractor for the Department of Transportation was busy erecting a telephone pole right in the middle of the sidewalk between Beach 90 Street and Beach 91 Street on Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Onlookers thought it was funny, but one worker said that placing the pole directly in the middle of the sidewalk was necessary to keep the poles lined up. The poles, The Wave has learned, will be temporary, as LIPA moves its electric service from the south side of the street to the new poles on the north side of the street. The move is necessary, officials say, to accommodate a new sewer project. When asked if he believed that it was not really sensible to put a pole in the center of the sidewalk, one of the workers erecting the pole said, “I’m just glad I’m not the engineer who planned this.” A city spokesperson told The Wave that the new poles “have all the proper permits on file.” 002p1.jpg
