On Wednesday, April 28, the second- and third-graders of the Waterside Children’s Studio School (P.S. 317) performed at the New York City Student Shakespeare Festival at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in Lower Manhattan. The students took bits and pieces from The Tempest and put them together in their own representation of the play. “Our inspiration came from watching the ocean views from our school building and imagining the ship in the crazy storm conjured by the spirits under Prospero’s command,” says Denise Getchius-Staines, Waterside’s drama teacher. The students who performed are part of the Shakespeare cluster at Waterside which is part of the School Wide Enrichment Model that the school has adopted into the regular school day on Fridays. 028p1.jpg
