Many members of the Orthodox Jewish community in Far Rockaway gathered at a local synagogue last week to decry a sign atop a strip club at Rockaway Turnpike and Brookville Boulevard that shows a nubile woman barely clothed in strips of black material. In hope of doing something about the sign, which residents say offends their sensibility and their religious upbringing, the Orthodox came to Congregation Kneseth Israel on Monday night to meet with City Councilman James Sanders Jr. as well as a Nassau County legislator. The residents argued that they must pass by the sign each day while entering or leaving their community to go to Nassau County. "I don't want my kids exposed to this open pornography," one resident said at the meeting. "We went 25 miles out of our way to avoid the sign. It's just not inappropriate, it's demeaning." The Platinum Club argues that it has a right to advertise its business.
