The annual memorial swim to honor the memory of Firefighter Steven Belson, who was killed in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, was held last Saturday at "Bell's Beach," better known as Beach 90 Street. Belson was a lifeguard on that beach in his younger days and often surfed there. As part of the memorial, present day lifeguards were awarded scholarships by Madeline Belson, Steve's mother and by her grandson, Jack. Those who received the scholarships included: Catherine Russo (Breezy Point); Patrick Kelly (Riis Park); Michael Reinhardt (Beach 149 Street shack); Seamus P. Kelly (Breezy Point); Robert J. Klein (Breezy Point); Sheila O'Rourke (Beach 73 Street shack); John Reinhardt (Beach 135 Street shack); Edward Lynch (Beach 135 Street shack); Joshua Steinberg (Beach 135 Street shack); Jaclyn Collins (Breezy Point). Sean Kelleher, the event's coordinator, thanked the life0guards for "putting their life on the line each day in order to keep beachgoers safe." 032p1_xlg.jpg
