A domestic dispute in a Far Rockaway high rise building turned deadly, police say, when a man identified as Elmar Diaz, 34, smashed his unidentified girlfriend in the head with a chunk of wood and then possibly slashed his own throat. Sources say that Diaz and his friend were arguing in her apartment at 13-34 Caffrey Avenue when the argument turned physical. Diaz reportedly picked up a two by four and smashed the woman in the head. From that point, official sources differ on what happened, with police saying that he then slashed his own throat, but other published reports stating that his throat was slashed in the struggle with his girlfriend. When the woman's son reportedly came home, he found a bloody scene, with the two combatants on the floor. The woman is reportedly in extremely critical condition at Jamaica Hospital and is not expected to survive. Diaz was reported in critical but stable condition at the same hospital, under arrest for the assault on his girlfriend. Charges against Diaz were pending at press time, but a bedside arraignment is expected this weekend.
