On July 11 the Central and East end Rockaway was brought to standstill as a major fire erupted at the site of the old Carroll Lumber Yard. According to Fire Department officials, six firefighters suffered serious injuries, ranging from a broken foot to smoke inhalation, while battling the blaze. Three firemen were from Engine Company 266; two were from Engine Company 328; and one was from Engine Company 173.
