The first meeting of the “Osprey Club” took place last week at P.S. 47 in Broad Channel. With organizational help from local coordinators Kate Willsen, Laura Steinhart and Barbara Toborg, eight children (grades 4-6) came to view an after school slide program on wildlife found in Jamaica Bay given by Don Riepe. They also played a memory game on marine life and were given an opportunity to discuss their interests. The club will meet once a month and have outdoor field trips in the warmer weather. Indoor and outdoor activities include slide presentations, demonstrations with live animals, field trips to the wildlife refuge and other sites around Jamaica Bay, learning how to test water quality and seining with nets to study and observe marine life. Besides being fun, these activities will have the educational benefits of building vocabulary, learning about the scientific method and providing outdoor experience. For information about the club contact Kate Willsen or Laura Steinhart in Broad Channel or Barbara Toborg of the American Littoral Society, 28 West 9t Road, Broad Channel, NY 11693. Student members will receive newsletters and a T-shirt.
