The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has named Samantha Carini of Belle Harbor, and Diana Lawless of Park Slope, Brooklyn as Commended Students. These students placed among the top 5% of more than one million students who entered the 2004 competition. Samantha and Diana attend St. Saviour High School, Park Slope which has been educating girls since 1917. In 1998, St. Saviour was listed among the top 96 high schools throughout the nation as a result of a study conducted by the University of Chicago. “Recognition of academically talented students and of the key role played by schools in their development is essential to the pursuit of educational excellence in our nation,” commented a spokesperson for the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. “The young people being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding academic potential by their strong performance in this highly competitive program. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and that they will continue to pursue scholastic excellence and to develop their talents to the fullest.
