Japanese Black Pines are dying from Asian Tree Blight on Long Island. The Park Service reportedly is replacing the dead trees in Riis Park with other evergreen varieties. It will take a long time for them to reach the stature of the ancients that produced an aesthetic landscape. Hopefully the dead trees on Beach 19 Street Promenade in Far Rockaway (pictured here) will also be replaced. Maybe hardy flowering crab apple trees would add more beauty in spring to the dark gray concrete. Photo by Bernard Blum.044p1_lg.jpg
