In spite of the downpour on Friday morning, April 11, a number of schools got together to hold a mini-rally to protest Governor Pataki’s proposed cuts to Universal Pre-kindergarten (UPK) funding. Presently in New York State, any parent or guardian of a four year old is entitled to send his/her child to school (for a 2 ½ hour school day) at no charge to the parent/guardian. Students from the following District 27 UPK programs participated in the rally: On Our Way Learning Center, Bethel Mission Loving Day Care and Rockaway Child Care Center. The rally was organized by Michele Hankins, Executive Director of Bethel Mission and Barbara Frankel, Educational Director of On Our Way. Also attending were Milton Martin, Jr., Borough Administrator of the New York Housing Authority, Rev. Curtis B. Sexton, Pastor of Bethel Mission Station Church, and Clayer Frederick, Director of Has Grace and Tender Mercies Senior Citizen’s Program. Those who wish to join in the protest of the proposed budget cuts to the UPK program, may call the Governor at (518)474-8390 or may contact their local Assembly person.
