Motorists driving northbound on Cross Bay Boulevard in the vicinity of the wildlife sanctuary at about 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon were startled by a plume of black smoke that rose from the marshland surrounding the road obstructing motorist's vision on the multi-lane road. Sources at the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department, which was the first on scene, said that a homeless man had set the fire in an attempt to keep warm, but that it got out of hand and spread rapidly. Pictured, members of the volies pull hose to put out the stubborn fire. 023p1_xlg.jpg
