St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, South Shore, recently received a $1,000 grant from the students of P.S. 197, which is located at 825 Hicksville Road, Far Rockaway, who raised the money by collecting pennies. The students were third, fourth, and fifth graders who were members of the Common Cents Roundtable, a city-wide Penny Harvest and youth philanthropy program. The students collected as many pennies as possible, and participated in a process to determine community needs, establish funding criteria and a decision-making process to determine how to distribute the funds they had collected. “The children of PS 197 have really honored us by determining us to be worthy of their grant and we are pleased to be a part of this community effort,” said Allan Steinberg, MD, Chairman, Department of Pediatrics, St. John’s Episcopal Hospital.
