Members of the local volunteer ambulance companies, EMS and PHC Emergency Room personnel attended a breakfast and lecture at Peninsula Hospital Center on Sunday, December 11 for continuing medical education credits. Dr. Michael Franklin, Director of PHC’s Emergency Medicine Department gave a presentation to better prepare first responding emergency personnel to recognize the symptoms of stroke. This topic was selected by Dr. Franklin (pictured fourth from the left, back row) because Peninsula Hospital Center is the NYS Department of Health’s designated Stroke Center for the Rockaways and Southeast Queens. Rapid diagnosis and treatment can help many who would suffer far more serious neurological consequences if time were allowed to elapse between stroke occurrence and treatment - “Time is Brain.” Patients with signs and symptoms of stroke are brought to Peninsula Hospital Center where a stroke team is in place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for immediate triage, CT Scan and consult with a neurologist and/or neurosurgeon. 089p1_xlg.jpg
