These two photographs come from the archives of the Rockaway Museum. This photograph must have been taken sometime in the early 1950 and we believe it shows Wavecrest Gardens under construction. Actually, a Wave editor lived in the building under construction directly in the center of the photograph. Note that Seagirt Boulevard is not yet in place. The boulevard would eventually run through the center of the development at Beach 21 Street. In the upper right portion of the photograph are rows upon rows of bungalows and summer rental apartments that ran from Beach 23 Street right down the oceanfront all the way to Irishtown on Beach 111 Street. Most of those bungalows were torn down 35 years ago to make room for an urban renewal project that was recently started as Arverne By The Sea. At the far right center of the picture is PS 106 at Beach 35 Street. The north-south road at the extreme left of the photograph is Central Avenue.
