Four lucky civilians – hand picked by NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly – were made “Commanding Officers For the Day” in the 100 Precinct this week. The commanders donned bulletproof vests for a ride-along/precinct tour with police officers Wednesday night. Other perks included a review of CompStat crime statistics and face time with the real McCoy – Deputy Inspector Paul Piekarski. Earlier in the evening, Piekarski described the fight for even lower crime numbers: “We’re no longer splitting hairs, we’re splitting atoms,” he said.
