Sparks flew in Rockaway Beach Monday afternoon when a power line broke away from a utility pole and hit the ground just steps from a bus stop and the intersection of Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 102 Street. The downed line caused power in the area to blink and knocked out traffic signals along the boulevard. Firefighters on the scene said that a piece of a helium balloon (inset photo) that was snared on another line might have caused a power arc triggering the dangerous episode. The innocent looking party favor contains Mylar, a shiny film with electrostatic properties. Traffic was rerouted and onlookers were kept at a safe distance. An FDNY spokesperson said there were no injuries.
