Local historian Vivian R. Carter, left, gives a brief history of Rockaway before Rockaway Waterfront Alliance's bike tour of the peninsula begins last Saturday. Among the subjects she spoke about was the Cornell Cemetery, near New Haven Avenue, which is the resting place for Rockaway's first settlers and their families; and Hog Island, which was located off the peninsula at Beach 17 Street. It was washed away in heavy storms in the early 1900's. 058p1_xlg.jpg
