The Department of Parks and Recreation officially designated the city's second "surfing-only" area last Friday morning, with a ceremony on the sand in Arverne. The new "surfing-only" area stretches from Beach 67 Street (accessible via the A Train and the new Beach Front Road) through Beach 69 Street. The city's only other designated surf spot was established between Beach 87 and Beach 91 Streets two years ago. "It became so popular so fast that it got crowded and we had to open another one," Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe (fifth from right) explained. Benepe was joined by Parks staffers, Rockaway representatives, members of the Surfrider Foundation and others. Photos by Brian Magoolaghgan 077p1_xlg.jpg
