Vivian Carter, author of “Images of America: Rockaway Beach,” presents an autographed copy of her recently published book to the students of Immaculate Conception School of Jamaica Estates. The ceremony occurred during intermission of the Lhévinne Classical Concert Series at Maple Grove Cemetery, where Carter was the guest of the cemetery’s historian, Carl Ballenas, longtime teacher at Immaculate Conception. Carter recognized the students’ contributions to the research and writing of two books for Arcadia Publishing, and also thanked them for raising funds to pay for replacement of the long-missing bust at Riis Park in Rockaway, commemorating Jacob Riis. The students are now collecting funds for a plaque to mark the location of the Queens home of Josef and Rosina Lhévinne, internationally distinguished musicians of the twentieth century, in honor of whom the concert series is named.
