The trees and utility poles along Cross Bay Boulevard claimed another life on Saturday, March 10, when Robert Aleca, 23, of Ridgewood, Brooklyn lost control of his 2005 Nissan Altima at about 7:06 a.m. and hit first a tree and then a utility pole. Police say that Aleca was driving southbound towards Rockaway at East 1st Road in Broad Channel when the car went airborne, flipped and hit both the tree and the pole. The crippled Altima came to rest on its top and Aleca had to be cut out of the totaled car. He was transported to Jamaica Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. Police sources say that the case remains open and is being investigated by the Highway Accident Investigation Squad. There have been several fatal accidents on that stretch of road in recent years, and the city has said that it would place Jersey Barriers along the road to reduce those fatalities. 1p1.jpg
