The Rockaway Beach Boulevard median reconstruction near Beach 108 Street was started at least four months ago by the Department of Transportation, but has not been completed. As a result, the giant crater has become a harbor for garbage and an eyesore for the Rockaway Park community. In addition, the same stretch of road from Beach 102 Street to Beach 108 has had no street lights for just as long. According to DOT, LIPA is in the process of removing a conduit and abating asbestos, and DOT has been monitoring the site to ensure asbestos is not exposed. Once the LIPA project is completed, DOT says, it will finish the median. In the meantime, the garbage has been removed and the street lights are planned for installation. Despite what DOT says, however, there’s been no sign of work activity by LIPA. Requested comment from LIPA failed to make our deadline.
