Louise Abrams, Technology Coordinator at PS 47, recently received her Ph.D in Education from Capella University. Her dissertation was on the effect of computer mathematic games on elementary and middle school students' motivation and achievement in math. An experimental group of students, that practiced math skill on the computer and a control group that practiced the same skills with their teachers made equivalent achievement in math from pre to post unit tests. Abrams encourages teachers to capture the motivation that games provide, and consider games as an added dimension of instruction which may contribute to better comprehension of mathematics.
