A canal to contain flooding, such as the one located on Beach 35 Street in this design, was suggested by several groups. The idea was modeled after canals in Miami/Fort Lauderdale and Amsterdam. Bannister Creek, a canal in Rockaway, went from the ocean to the bay until it was filled in after the major storms of the 1890s and early 1900s. 047p1_xlg.jpg
