Sophia Mighty, 4th grade teacher, has been running the Mighty Miler program at PS 253 since March 2010. She took up running about three years ago and has since competed in four marathons—New Jersey, Nike Women’s in San Francisco, New York City, and recently, Chicago. Last year Mighty (no relation to the program ) had 21 runners; this year, 30 have already signed up as of the end of November, with more expected as the year goes on. Geemozz Jean Pierre’s is in his second year as a Mighty Miler. He is a 10-year-old 5th grader and competed in the 100-meter dash. Mya Smithson is also a 10-year-old 5th grader who is a second year Mighty miler. She has asthma, but says that running somehow alleviates her symptoms. On October 16, at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island, PS 253Q Mighty Milers were presented with wool hats that were hand-knitted by Heather Bergstein and Mary Lou Risley, with help from a crew of volunteers. 037p1.jpg
