Local representatives join members of Queens’ Sikh community as the Arverne Library was presented with pamphlets and books on the Sikh religion. Community activist and leader of the Sikh awareness project, Jagir Singh Bains, in a press release said, “I’m not advertising my religion. I’m trying to explain my religion.” Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Sikhs have become targets of hate crimes. The August 31 donation is meant to increase awareness of the Sikh culture, history and religion. Approximately 50 Queens libraries have received donations. The plan is for all branches in the system to receive such materials. Photos by Miriam Rosenberg 041p1.jpg
